On 29 October, the Republic of Turkey proudly marked its Republic Day (Cumhuriyet Bayramı) — a national holiday commemorating the foundation of the modern Turkish Republic in 1923. This year, the celebration in Brussels carried special meaning, as Turkey’s diplomatic missions in the city came together for the first-ever joint reception.

A United Celebration in the Heart of Europe

The event was jointly organized by the Embassy of Turkey in Belgium, the Permanent Delegation of Turkey to the European Union, and the Permanent Mission of Turkey to NATO. Bringing together these three representations for the first time symbolized unity and Turkey’s deep engagement with both the European Union and the transatlantic community.

The reception gathered numerous high-level guests, including ambassadors, senior EU and NATO officials, members of the diplomatic corps, Belgian government representatives, and leaders of the Turkish community in Belgium. The atmosphere reflected a strong sense of solidarity, respect, and friendship between Turkey and its international partners.

In his remarks, Ambassador Görkem Barış Tantekin underlined that Republic Day is not only a day of national pride but also a celebration of peace, progress, and cooperation. He highlighted the importance of maintaining the founding principles of the Republic while strengthening Turkey’s role in international dialogue and diplomacy.

A Moment of Cultural and Diplomatic Connection

Guests enjoyed an evening of Turkish hospitality, featuring traditional cuisine, music, and warm exchanges that showcased Turkey’s cultural richness. In a lighthearted moment, Turkish Airlines organized a raffle, offering flight tickets to Turkey to a few attendees — a gesture that added joy and excitement to the celebration.

Honoring the Spirit of the Republic

More than a commemoration of history, the Republic Day reception in Brussels served as a symbol of unity and partnership, reflecting Turkey’s continued commitment to international cooperation and mutual understanding. The evening reminded guests that the ideals on which the Republic was founded — democracy, modernity, and peace — remain as relevant today as they were over a century ago.
